A Korean man who was visiting Los Angeles was arrested for assaulting a Korean woman for no apparent reason on March 10, according to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in LA on Tuesday.
The incident, which is now being investigated by the LA police, happened around 6:00 p.m. in the center of Koreatown.
The man, 22, whose identity remains unknown, approached a woman, 24, whose identity was withheld upon personal request, and asked her if she was Korean.
When she answered "Yes," he allegedly left for a short period of time before coming back to assault her with a hammer.
The victim was sent to a nearby hospital for treatment and is known to have no serious injuries.
"The assailant entered the U.S. recently through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization visa waiver program," the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in LA told Yonhap.
However, the local police said no actual motive has been found, due to the assailant talking nonsense. LA police have put in a request for a psychiatric assessment after deeming the assailant mentally ill.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that if prosecuted the assailant will be incarcerated in the U.S. and serve his sentence there if he does not request extradition.
