A giant pink condom set up in Sydney to raise awareness about safe sex has drawn criticism from some corners.
The 18-meter condom was placed over the Hyde Park Obelisk by the Aids Council of New South Wales (ACON) to promote safe sex among gay males. The campaign, dubbed "I'm ON," carried the message: "Test more + treat early + stay safe = ending HIV."
However, some commentators are criticizing the campaign because it is located inside a park where children play; and because the condom is placed over a 157-year-old obelisk.
"The message on the condom is to stay safe, but our children aren't safe from sexual messages anywhere these days," Wendy Francis, a spokeswoman for the Australian Christian Lobby, told the Guardian "This is a park, children need to be able to retain their innocence," she was quoted as saying.
ACON spokesperson Yves Calmette maintained that the installation, which will stay up until Wednesday, is an important reminder of the importance of safe sex.
"It's another way of showing how critical it is to maintain the safe-sex culture in Sydney," Calmette told the Guardian.
