Fast food giant Subway is under fire for a television ad in which women are advised to stay skinny so they can wear sexy costumes for Halloween.
"Halloween is coming. You've got to stay in shape for all the costumes," says a woman shown in various provocative outfits in the commercial.
The costumes are described as "attractive nurse, Spicy Red Riding Hood, Viking princess warrior, hot devil, sassy teacher and foxy fullback."
In the advertisement, Subway claims its menus will help women stay fit for any occasion, including "looking hot on Halloween."
Online responses expressed anger and disappointment.
"Just saw the new Subway commercial shaming people into being ‘in shape for Halloween costumes.' Way to be misogynistic AND sizeist,"one commenter said.
"Thanks Subway, for reminding us how sexist Halloween can be, and some brands too."
"Really, Subway? I'm glad you've got healthy options, but this is the wrong message to send to women."
A Subway representative told The Hollywood Reporter, "We understand that some people may not have picked up on the intended humor in our Halloween commercial. Our objective was certainly not to offend anyone."
