Foreign workers are flooding Gangwon Province construction sites, driving domestic workers out of a job, according to a Gangwon Construction Workers' Union report published Tuesday.
The increase has also led to a rise in illegal immigrant workers, with 873 counted between 2014 and 2016.
According to the report, of 3,543 workers building 22 apartment complexes in Gangwon Province, a whopping 72.3 percent (2,560) were foreigners, while 22.9 percent (812) were domestic workers from outside the province and only 4.8 percent (171) were Gangwon natives.
"Construction work is occupied by foreign workers and there is no place for domestic province construction workers," a union official said. "We plan to hold a press conference at Gangneung to demand a solution to resolve the illegal foreign manpower on Gangwon Province construction sites by the end of this month."
