Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province, will establish a support center for foreign residents, according to the Ministry of Interior Thursday.
The county was recently selected for the "2017 Population Declining Regional Integration Support Project" -- organized by the ministry -- and has received 1 billion won ($875,000) to set up the centre.
The project received 21 applications and nine were selected nationwide.
Eumseong was the only area in North Chungcheong to be chosen.
It has seen an increase in its elderly population and has a low ratio of women between 20 and 39, making the area eligible for the project.
Meanwhile, the number of immigrant workers has been rising with the increase of industrial complexes, giving Eumseong the highest migrant population for a local governmental district -- 11.3 percent.
This has led to problems between Koreans and foreigners.
The support center will assist foreign residents who are experiencing difficulties due to cultural differences and help them integrate with the community. It also aims to educate Koreans to change their view of migrant workers and be a place where children of multicultural families and Koreans can play together.
