Two Malaysian nationals were caught in Seoul using counterfeit credit cards to buy luxury items, according to Songpa Police Station on Thursday.
They had 30 cards in their possession but did not know who made them because a contact in Malaysia supplied the cards, police said.
The two allegedly went on a shopping spree with the cards on May 25, buying luxury items, including smartphones, worth 5.5 million won ($4,892).
Their spree was finally stopped when a clerk found that a card's information did not match that of one of the two suspects.
The other man turned himself in after the arrested man pegged him as an accomplice. Police have banned them from leaving the country.
The two, who had never met each other before, confessed that they were handed the cards by a contact in Malaysia to buy luxury items and bring them back for a 7 to 8 percent commission. They received instructions from their contact through We Chat, a Chinese mobile messenger, on what to buy.
"The two suspects abused the fact that most Korean shops don't check if the credit card belongs to the owner," a police official told Yonhap News Agency.
