A protest in California against a New York grand jury's decision not to indict a white policeman in the chokehold death of an unarmed black man, turned violent Saturday, with protesters smashing windows and throwing objects at police.

One officer sustained minor injuries after rocks were thrown at police, a spokeswoman for the Berkeley Police Department told the Associated Press.

Several businesses were looted or damaged, the spokeswoman, Jenn Coates, said.

KCBS reported that tear gas and smoke bombs were used to break up the crowd.

The incident came amid days of peaceful protests in New York City and elsewhere after the announcement Wednesday that the officer would not be indicted for the death of Eric Garner, a black man who repeatedly gasped ''I can't breathe'' while he was arrested for selling loose cigarettes.

The protests follow those after a Missouri grand jury decided not to indict a white officer in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was unarmed.

Protests in New York continued, with people staging a "die-in" in Grand Central Terminal, where they lay on the floor to criticize the lack of an indictment.

3∼4천 명에 이를 것으로 짐작되는 시위대는 '정의없이 평화없다'(No Justice No peace), '흑인의 생명도 소중하다'(Black lives matter), '대배심은 사기다'(Grand jury is Fraud) 등의 문구가 적힌 종이를 흔들면서 연방 구호를 외쳤다.

(Our democracy can't breathe)고 적은 피켓도 눈길을 끌었다.
