A man, who was arrested Saturday on charges of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old elementary school girl in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul last month, confessed to the crime, police said, Sunday.
The confession by the 25-year-old suspect, identified only as Yang, was made while he was being questioned at a Seoul district court ahead of the issuance of a warrant.
“Yang who had denied the crime confessed that he committed the offense while under the influence of alcohol,” a police officer said. “He admitted sexually harassing her. But he claims that there was no sexual assault.”
Yang, who has been living in a small apartment in Jangan-dong, Dongdaemun-gu, quit his waiting job in May and has been suffering financial difficulties, according to the police.
Yang is suspected of taking the girl, who was playing in a playground by her house while her parents were at work, into her house in broad daylight and sexually assaulting the elementary schoolgirl on June 26.
The reenactment of the crime is expected to take place on Tuesday.
