Storage facilities that will allow people or businesses to store belongings for extended periods of time have been set up in Seoul's subway stations, according to Seoul Metro. This is part of the subway operator's new project to create logistics centers inside subway stations in the city.

Seoul Metro said it has launched its T Storage service at Dapsimni Station on Line 5, Isu Station on Lines 4 and 7, and Garak Market Station on Lines 3 and 8.

T Storage spaces have been set up in vacant shops or unused spaces in subway stations. Demand for mid- to long-term private storage from individuals and companies has been gradually increasing as the number of single-person households has increased but their homes are often small, with little storage space.

The service is operated by an unmanned system. Users can download T-locker, an app which allows them to handle everything from assigning the storage space to paying the rental fee.

There are two types of storage; cabinet type and room type. The cabinet is 1 meter in width, 1 meter in length and 2 meters in height, and can be rented for 79,000 won ($71.5) per month. It is suitable for hobby-related equipment, collectibles, and for the personal belongings of people who need temporary storage as they move house or to another office.

The inside of the storage area is fully equipped with thermal insulation and humidity control, allowing the luggage to be stored at an optimal condition. Closed-circuit TV systems that record inside the facility are also installed. Owners of the belongings can get up to 1 million won in compensation if goods are stolen or damaged.

Seoul Metro will hold a 20 percent discount event until Dec. 23 to mark the launch of the service.

The operator plans to create a maximum of 50 centers by 2022. The goal is to change the perception of the subway station space and improve Seoul Metro's service so that it can respond to changes in the new industrial structure, it said.

"The logistics center project will create new profits by solving the problem of long-term vacant shopping malls in subway stations, as well as revitalizing the local economy, creating jobs and promoting civic convenience," said Kim Sang-bum, CEO of Seoul Metro.
