Legendary British actor Sir Roger Moore -- deemed one of the best to play James Bond in the 007 spy series -- died from cancer on Tuesday, according to his family. He was 89.
"With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today," his family said on Twitter. "We are all devastated. Thank you Pops for being you, and for being so very special to so many people."
Moore played the famous spy in seven Bond movies, beginning with Live And Let Die in 1973 and ending with A View To A Kill in 1985.
The James Bond International Fan Club, the group leading the tributes for Moore, said: "Nobody did Bond better."
"Sir Roger will always be remembered as the most enduring actors to play 007 and as a great ambassador for the franchise."
Moore also starred in the TV series "The Persuaders" and "The Saint."
The actor died in Switzerland and will have a private funeral in Monaco, according to his wishes, his family said.
