TV personality Amy, who was ordered to leave Korea after being found guilty of drug abuse, reportedly attempted suicide after a Korean TV variety show aired groundless rumors about her.
The false accusations were made in an episode of "I Heard it Through the Grapevine," a variety talk show on Channel A, a Korean cable TV network, Monday.
The show discusses rumors and gossip about Korean entertainment industry personalities with celebrities and entertainment reporters.
In the series, the show's panel accused Amy of borrowing money from a reporter for hospital treatment and asking other reporters to alter her face digitally to cover a skin condition.
Following the show, Amy reportedly attempted suicide at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday.
"I am so tired now," Amy posted on Instagram before the attempt. "I have nowhere to fall. I want to go somewhere I don't feel sad. I forgot how to laugh. My tears have dried up. I'm giving up. The truth will come out eventually after I die. Thank you to those who believed in me."
Amy was rushed to hospital and is in a stable condition.
Public criticism has been mounting against the program since reports of the suicide attempt a
nd the show's producers have officially apologized.
"We accept that the episode hurt Amy," they said. "This is very unfortunate and we deliver sincere apologies to her. We wish her a fast recovery."
Amy, 34, whose Korean name is Lee Yoon-ji, debuted as a TV actress in 2008. In 2015, Immigration ordered her to leave Korea for violating drug laws a second time, after she received a suspended jail term for abusing the psychotropic drug propofol in November 2012.
She has been living in the U.S. since her departure on Dec. 30, 2015.
