Sex has often been considered uncharted territory in Korea for discussion in TV dramas. Coupang Play's new original series, "Fanta G spot," starring Ahn Hee-yeon, better known as Hani of EXID, intends to bring the taboo subject to the surface with a story of two friends' raunchy adventures to discovering sexual pleasure.
"(When I read the script,) two things came to my mind. First, it was so intriguing. Everything that I would discuss with my friends or with (EXID) group members was there. So it was really interesting," the singer and actor said during a press conference of the series at Josun Palace in Gangnam District, southern Seoul, Thursday.
"And then, to be honest, I did think a lot about if I should really star in this. I was like, 'Can I do it?' and 'Would it really be okay?'"
The series, which will hit the platform Friday, revolves around two women, Hee-jea (Ahn) and Mi-na (Bae Woo-hee) who run a sex therapy podcast. The two encounter different stories from listeners and explore the world of sex while offering advice.
It is directed and scripted by rookie director Lee Yoon-ah and scriptwriter Do Yeon.

The director said that she was drawn to the series right away.
"As I read writer Do's script, the plot was very dynamic so I really wanted to take part," she said.
Lee added that she wanted the series to unfold the candid stories of women. "This is the work made together by the female director, writer and production team. I wanted to overtly show the story of women and also do a good job," she said.
"Until now, a woman's sex life was something that you needed to hide and you can't be honest about. As time has changed, I feel that this series will help people be more open and receptive to discussing women's lust and sexual fantasies."
Ahn plays the role of a woman who has never felt actual sexual pleasure. "Hee-jae breaks up with her boyfriend she has been dating for five years. Then, she realizes that she wants to get to know more about herself," she said.
The actress talked about her first experience of filming sex scenes, saying she enjoyed making the scenes.
"It was my first time filming those scenes. And it was so much fun. At first, it was a bit scary but I had a huge helper; there was a choreographer who helped us with the scenes that involved characters making love," she said. "We discussed the scenes a lot, which made us comfortable about making them. So it was enjoyable."
Bae, a former member of the girl group Dal Shabet, plays a seductive character who seeks only relationships with no strings attached.
The actress said that the series has changed her perspective on the idea of sex life.
"Working on this series, I came to have more courage. I would be more open to talking about this topic with friends and would ask if I have any sex-related questions instead of being shy or trying to hide," she said.
