The "Pengsoo sensation" continues to rock South Korea.
The penguin-inspired mascot's debut song "This is PENGSOO" swept major domestic music streaming charts only hours after it was released at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, the song ― created in a unique combination of rap and yodel ― topped Genie and Bugs, two major music streaming websites here. The song ― whose playtime is two minutes, 50 seconds ― also made it into the Top 30 of the nation's biggest music site Melon.
"Thank you for making the song go into the charts," wrote Tiger JK ― a popular hip-hop musician who co-wrote the song with Pengsoo and his fellow musicians, Bizzy and BIBI ― on Instagram. "I hope the song will receive more love and support, which will pave the way for the song to make it onto Billboard."
The song's impressive performance is a reflection of the massive popularity and ever-expanding fan base of Pengsoo that commands 2.14 million subscribers on YouTube.
The song is a part of the character's "BILLBOARD PROJECT Vol. 1," according to the Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) that launched Pengsoo's YouTube channel early last year.
Proceeds from the song will be donated to an environmental organization in celebration of World Penguin Day (April 25).
