GEORGE: Hey! How the hell do you remember your bank balance off the top of your head like that? See, that impresses me. 조 지: 이봐요! 도대체 자기 은행 잔고를 즉석에서 어떻게 그렇게 기억하죠? 정말 놀랍습니다.
Erin slams the door shut. 에린은 문을 쾅 하고 닫는다.
GEORGE: You’re dead wrong about that zero thing, baby. 조 지: 그 0이란 것에 대해서는 완전히 잘못 짚은 거요.
George starts walking back to his friends by the motorcycle, then falls over laughing. His friends also laugh. 조지는 오토바이 옆에 있는 친구들에게 돌아오다가 웃으면서 벌렁 나가 자빠진다. 친구들도 웃는다.
24. INT. MASRY & VITITOE. ERIN’S OFFICE. DAY Erin is on the phone to her baby-sitter. In front of her is a family picture. 24. 내부. 매스리와 비티토. 에린의 사무실. 낮 에린이 애 봐주는 사람과 전화로 이야기 중이다. 그녀 앞에는 가족 사진이 있다.
ERIN: How long has she been crying like that? Well, she’s got that tooth comin’ in. Why don’t you give her a cold washcloth to suck on? 에 린: 언제부터 그렇게 울어요? 이가 나려는 거예요. 빨게 찬 수건을 입에 물려줘요.
Erin sees Ed walking in. 에린은 에드가 들어오는 것을 본다.
ERIN: I gotta go. Erm, there’s a clean one in the bag. I’ll check back later. 에 린: 끊어야겠어요. 저, 가방에 깨끗한 거 있어요. 나중에 다시 연락할게요.
Erin hangs up the phone. 에린은 전화를 끊는다.
ED: Where’s Anna? 에 드: 애나는 어디 있죠?
ERIN: Erm. She’s out to lunch with the girls. 에 린: 여직원들과 점심 먹으러 갔어요.
Ed puts a big file box onto the desk. 에드는 책상 위에 큰 자료 상자를 놓는다.
ED: Ah, okay. I have to open a file. Er ... Real estate thing, pro bono. 에 드: 좋아요. 새 파일을 만들어야 해요. 어, 부동산 관계, 무료 사건이오.
ERIN: Okay. 에 린: 알았어요.
ED: You know how to do that, don’t you? 에 드: 어떻게 하는지 알고 있죠?
ERIN: Yeah, yeah, I got it. No problem. 에 린: 그럼요, 그럼요, 알아요. 문제없어요.
ED: Good. 에 드: 좋아요.
Erin puts away the files. Ed heads out, but pauses before leaving. 에린은 파일을 치운다. 에드는 출구로 향해 나가다가 멈춘다.
ED: You’re a girl. 에 드: 당신도 여자잖소.
ERIN: Excuse me? 에 린: 무슨 말씀이죠?
ED: Why aren’t you out to lunch with the girls? You’re a girl. 에 드: 당신도 여직원인데 왜 같이 점심 먹으러 안나갔소?
ERIN: I guess I’m not the right kind. Erin goes back to work. Ed starts to leave, but turns and stops. 에 린: 같은 부류가 아닌가 보죠. 에린은 일로 돌아간다. 에드는 나가다가 돌아서서 멈춘다.
ED: Uh, er, look, now ... you may want to ... now that you’re working here, you may want to er ... rethink your wardrobe a little. 에 드: 아, 저… 어울리고 싶으면 이제 여기 직원이니까 당신 복장을 재고해 보는 게 어떻겠소?

조지는 “You got a little girl?”이라며 의외라는 표정을 짓는다. 그러자, 에린은 자신의 자녀, 이혼 경력, 16달러 남은 재산 등을 나열한 후 “I’m guessing zero is the number of times you’re gonna call it”이라고 쏘아붙인다.
그런 에린이 조지는 귀엽게 느껴져서 “See, that impresses me.”라고 칭찬을 한다. ‘~이 인상적이다’는 That is impressive라고 할 수도 있지만 That impresses me처럼 인상을 밝힐 수 있다. 강조를 하고 싶다면 That impresses me deeply라고 하면 되겠다.

You know, actually, well 등도 자연스럽게 사용하면 윤활유 역할을 한다. 그런데 에드의 rethink your wardrobe a little은 간접적인 표현으로 에린 입장에선 좀 더 명확한 설명이 필요하다. 보통의 경우라면 Excuse me? Sorry? Pardon? 또는 What do you mean?이라고 묻기 마련이다. 직접적인 성격의 에린은 어떨까?
